Opera Bar & Café

As lead fire safety engineer on the recently refurbished Sydney landmark and hotspot, Mark had to balance fire safety and heritage respect in carrying out his role on this project. As such, the existing structure and fabric of the building had to be respected for many reasons, but still satisfy the performance requirements of the Building Code. As such, Mark carried out numerous risk assessments for features that were built decades ago that under the modern day Building Code, could not be changed. As part of this risk assessment, Mark reviewed international data, fire safety standards as well as liaison with the Sydney Opera House staff in gaining a full understanding of the buildings unique design features and working the fire safety strategy around that as best we could. In the end, with the risk assessment carried out, structure and fabric remaining virtually untouched, small but measured additional fire safety features meant that the refurbished Bar and new Café both meet the requirements of the Building Code and the Sydney Opera House itself.
